The proceedings of the MASHCON conferences, which we organize every four years, contain peer-reviewed papers on all aspects related to manoeuvring in shallow and confined water. For each MASHCON conference, open access experimental benchmark data are released. These benchmark data are principally used by researchers worldwide to validate numerical tools.

Passing ship effects
To open a joined research effort on the validation and verification of the different research methods, the Knowledge Centre Manoeuvring in Shallow and Confined Water has selected model test data which were obtained during the PESCA (Passing Effects in Shallow and Confined Areas) captive model test program, which was executed in the towing tank for manoeuvres in confined water at Flanders Hydraulics. The captive model tests present results with the KCS as passing ship and a Neo-Panamax container carrier and an Aframax tanker as moored ships. The benchmark data itself and the publication are available upon simple request for interested parties and in particular for researchers wishing to validate numerical tools.
Ship interaction with the bottom
To open a joined research effort on the validation and verification of the different research methods, the Knowledge Centre Manoeuvring in Shallow and Confined Water has selected model test data which were obtained while executing tests with the DTC container carrier in the framework of the European SHOPERA project. The benchmark data are harmonic yaw and harmonic sway tests with the bare hull of the DTC at full draft and 20% under keel clearance at rest.
Ship - ship interaction
Benchmark model data obtained from tests at Flanders Hydraulics are available for evaluation purposes. The data for the forces and moments due to ship - ship interaction can be used to compare with results from numerical methods and simulation tools. This research project was carried in the framework of the project "KMB Investigating hydrodynamic aspect and control systems for ship-to-ship operations", co-ordinated by MARINTEK and financially supported by the Research Council of Norway. A selection of the model test results is made available by the project management and was published in MARSIM 2009.
Ship manoeuvring in waves
To open a joined research effort on the validation and verification of the different research methods, the Knowledge Centre Manoeuvring in Shallow and Confined Water has selected model test data which were obtained during the execution of seakeeping tests with the DTC container carrier in the framework of the European SHOPERA project. The benchmark data are both captive and free running model tests with the DTC at full draft in calm water and in waves. The benchmark data are available for interested parties and in particular for researchers wishing to validate numerical tools.
Ship behaviour in locks
Open access has been given to a selection of experimental data from model tests studying the behaviour of ships in or near locks. Researchers can use these data to validate numerical tools and mathematical models.
The first set of benchmark data were carried out with self-propelled models and were selected from model tests carried out in 2007-2008 to investigate the behaviour of vessels transiting the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks, which is presently under construction. The tests were carried out in a 1/80 scale model of a lock and an approach channel at Flanders Hydraulics. The second set of benchmark data were selected from systematic captive model tests carried out in the 1990s in the towing tank for manoeuvres in shallow water as a first step in a feasibility study for receiving bulk carriers with larger beam in the Pierre Vandamme Lock in Zeebrugge. This lock has a length of 500m, a width of 57 m and a depth of 18.5m. A 1/75 scale model of the lock configuration was constructed in the towing tank, with special attention to the asymmetric layout of the approach channel.
Bank effects
An elaborated test program on bank effects has been carried out in the Towing Tank for Manoeuvres in Confined Water at Flanders Hydraulics in the framework of the Phd research of Prof. Lataire. A selection of the measured model test data is available for the validation of mathematical models, numerical calculations or CFD.
